The International Labour Organization (ILO) launched a new development cooperation project to promote employment for Rwanda's youth.

  • On 12 July 2023, ILO and Rwanda announced a new development cooperation project to boost decent jobs for youth in the digital economy.
  • The main goal is to enable more young women and men in Rwanda to access decent job in its digital economy.
  • The project has a duration of 4 years with a Eur 4 million budget allocation.
  • It is financially supported by the Directorate for Development Cooperation and Humanitarian Affairs of the Luxembourg Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs. 

The project targets young men and women between the ages of 16 and 30 in the capital -Kigali- and in secondary cities. The main actions of the project concern the promotion and creation of decent jobs for women in the digital economy and the removal of gender barriers.

In addition, it aims to develop entrepreneurship in the digital economy by improving the digital skills of young women and men and to strengthen the public and private employment services offered to young people.

The project is expected to foster demand for digital services among micro, small and medium-sized enterprises.

It also supports the the Joint Programme on enhancing the African Digital Economy with International Labour Organization (ILO), International Telecommunication Union (ITU), and the African Union (AU). 

The government warmly welcomed the initiative, and is committed to promoting decent work and youth employment through their National Skills Development and Employment Promotion Strategy (NSDEPS) 2019-2024 and a National Decent Work Programme for Rwanda.
