Business Europe’s Council of Presidents Declaration

  • On 24 November 2023, presidents and chief executives of the member federations of BusinessEurope met in Brussels to present their priorities for the next Belgian Presidency of the Council of the European Union.

In their Declaration, presidents and chief executives of BusinessEurope’s members stressed the importance of adopting EU proposals that promote the competitiveness and development of European SMEs, strengthening the European economy.

The three priority actions identified by BusinessEurope are:

  1. Create regulatory breathing space in a well-integrated European Single Market, striking the right balance between over-regulation that hampers innovation, entrepreneurship, and investment in Europe and insufficient single market integration.
  2. Strike the right balance between security and enabling the European economy: considering that 85 per cent of economic growth in the coming years will be generated outside the EU, it is necessary for Europe to create trade and political alliances and synergies with other global market players.
  3. Flank the Green Deal with an Industrial Deal, reaching the EU's climate neutrality decarbonising without deindustrialising and ensuring that companies have the means to invest in this radical transformation.

The Council of Presidents concludes that these critical actions are needed to ensure that the green and digital transition leads to sustainable economic success and social well-being in Europe.
