Increasing employment disparities between developed and low-income countries are the focus of the 11thedition of the International Labour Organization’s (ILO) Monitor on the World of Work. The Report calls for strengthening social dialogue, international cooperation, and implementation of social protection schemes to tackle the significant differences between countries.
Deep differences in labour protection schemes between sectors are also examined in this edition. From a recent European Union (EU) framework to regulate cross-border teleworkers’ social security, an EU directive under discussion to protect platform workers to, on the other side, continuing labour protection challenges facing agri-food workers from informality to uncertain work conditions as experts develop principles and guidelines.
At a national level, workers and employers in various countries face divergent challenges due to technological changes. From the need to develop guidelines on the use of artificial intelligence in recruitment processes or ensuring safe and healthy teleworking conditions, to the ruling of the right of being paid for overtime work due to the use of messaging platforms. In other countries, gender equality and sexual harassment preventionare under discussion but need to accelerate.
All the updates provide a broad example of the divergences the world of work faces and the important role thatthe private sector plays in building an environmentally sustainable economy and society for all.
