Updates from specific sectors of the economy
This month newsletter provides updates from specific sectors of the economy, namely the maritime, agriculture, commerce and services, tourism sectors.
There is currently a humanitarian crisis for 400,000 seafarers who are stranded at sea due to the impossibility of operating the usual changes of crew. This very serious situation mobilized fourteen States to sign a joint statement to encourage States Members of the International Maritime Organisation to consider seafarers as workers providing essential services to ensure their “release” and to restore safety on board.
For the agricultural sector, the Canadian Government accurately instructed employers to adopt additional safety measures for seasonal workers and financial relief measures for the payment of wages during the compulsory 14 days quarantine period for workers coming from abroad.
Other news to point out are the nominal wage increase for the commerce and services sector agreed by the Superior Tripartite Council in Uruguay as of 2021, and a joint statement signed by Inditex S.A., a Spanish multinational, and IndustriALL for the garment sector.
Finally, a very important European Court decision has been delivered on data protection and data transfer between the Countries of the European Union and the United States. The “Schrems II” decision will most likely have enormous consequences for US companies that have branches in Europe, unless US legislation on use of data is substantially reformed.
