International Labour Standards, company vaccination plans, compulsory vaccination, telework legislation, the link between remote work and productivity, and career guidance to fill the skills gap are some of the cross-cutting issues covered in this edition of the newsletter.
A recent article in the 2021 International Comparative Legal Guides on Employment & Labour Laws and Regulations, written by staff at the International Organisation of Employers (IOE), recaps the development of International Labour Standards (ILS), including the processes of standard-setting, ratification, and supervisory procedures at the International Labour Organization (ILO). The article highlights the failures and successes of ILS throughout history, as well as the objectives and outputs of three key issues for the world of work: social protection, informal economy and violence and harassment.
Another important feature in this edition is an analysis of how the Covid-19 crisis in Italy fostered social dialogue, resulting in several tripartite agreements signed since the beginning of the pandemic. In the most recent agreement, public authorities and the private sector collaborate to offer additional spaces for vaccination.
In Italy, again, a law introduced compulsory vaccination for health care personnel. Violation of this obligation entails an obligation for the employer to transfer the employee or, if this is not possible, the suspension from work with no remuneration.
We feature an analysis of a highly controversial legislation in Argentina to regulate telework which raises questions of practicability.
A new labor code that entered into force in January 2021 in Viet Nam is examined in this issue. The Code introduces many changes in line with the ILO’s Fundamental Principles and Rights at Work, as foreseen in several trade agreements recently signed by Viet Nam (for example, with the European Union).
This edition concludes with two articles on skills gap and the risks of neglecting this element for policy makers, employers, and job seekers.
