Carrefour announces new strategic plan to promote diversity

  • On 5 March 2024, Carrefour unveiled its strategic plan for diversity and inclusion.
  • The Company has initiated a four-pillar action plan aimed at transforming the Company's diversity landscape by 2026.
  • It includes comprehensive anti-discrimination and unconscious bias training, establishing a community of role models, enhancing recruitment from diverse origins, and promoting employees from diverse backgrounds, especially women.

Carrefour's commitment to diversity and inclusion is backed by a comprehensive, voluntary, and anonymous survey among nearly 20,000 respondents in Carrefour France's workforce. According to the press release, the survey revealed a significantly positive perception of diversity within the Company, with 14 per cent of Carrefour employees born abroad surpassing the French national average of 12.8 per cent. Additionally, 78 per cent believe an employee's origin does not influence advancement opportunities within Carrefour.

However, the survey also uncovered critical areas needing attention—particularly the underrepresentation of diverse origins in managerial roles and the compounded challenges faced by women from diverse backgrounds.

These insights have catalysed Carrefour's strategic plan, focusing on education, representation, recruitment, and promotion to cultivate a more inclusive and diverse workplace.

The initiative to train all French employees on non-discrimination and unconscious bias by the end of 2024 is a commendable step towards fostering an inclusive culture. Similarly, creating a community of role models and forming partnerships with organisations like Les Déterminés and Le Club du 21ème Siècle indicates a proactive approach to uplifting and empowering underrepresented groups.

Carrefour plans to reassess its progress in 2026 with another IPSOS study.

Promoting diversity is a cornerstone of the Company's broader commitment under its Act For Change programme's "Grow and move forward together" pillar. This commitment isn't new; since 2004, when Carrefour signed its Diversity Charter, the Company has aimed to provide equal opportunities for everyone to join and develop within the organisation, irrespective of their background, skills, work experience, age, country of origin, and gender.
